About Cynthia Overgard
HypnoBirthing of Connecticut, LLC, was founded by Cynthia Overgard, who first discovered HypnoBirthing when she was 7 months pregnant with her first child, and later chose a midwife-assisted, drug-free birth.
Her son weighed 8 lb. 14 oz. and was born in a Jacuzzi bathtub at the birth center in Danbury CT. Her labor lasted just 3 1/2 hours from beginning to end. Cynthia, her husband, and their newborn son returned home just 8 hours later. The beauty and simplicity of that experience was life-changing. Within weeks, she happily resigned as a finance & risk executive at MasterCard to pursue the field of birthing.
In June 2009, Cynthia water-birthed her 9 lb. 7 oz. daughter during a midwife-assisted home-birth with her husband and son by her side. As the baby emerged, Cynthia received her daughter directly into her own arms.
How HypnoBirthing of CT Began
Since her first birth in 2005, Cynthia became increasingly committed to educating and empowering women in birthing. In 2007, Cynthia wrote and published her inspiring birth story in various print media — most notably, the internationally-acclaimed Mothering magazine made it the cover story of their annual Pregnancy Special in 2007. Later, Cynthia co-authored the textbook “Childbirth”, and most recently, Cynthia’s article, Taking Charge of Giving Birth , was the feature story in Pathways.
Board Member, International Maternity Institute
In early 2011, Cynthia was recognized by the International Maternity Institute as an “Expert in Childbirth Education”, and was offered a seat on the Advisory Board. Cynthia is currently working with the Institute to progress childbirth education programs to pregnant women globally.
Personal Life
Cynthia is deeply-passionate about all areas of healthy living, from her regular yoga practice to her vegetarian household and holistic approach to children’s health and child-raising. In addition to being a full-time mother of two, Cynthia is the Content Editor for two natural parenting publications — Pathways to Family Wellness magazine and Healthy Child. She has published work in finance at the University of CT, and greatly enjoyed her 9+ years as a senior-level Finance Professor at UConn’s Stamford campus. Cynthia, her husband, Eric, and their children live in Westport CT, where they’re active in their community and enjoy their family time hiking, swimming and playing with Bella (their adopted chocolate lab) at the beach.
