Birth Stories

Our goal was to have as natural and safe of a birth as possible and to have a healthy baby. At midnight on Oct. 29, I woke up. I could feel surges, but went back to bed. Of course, before I fell asleep, I asked my husband if he was ready to be a dad today…that quickly woke him up! Soon after I could feel my surges getting stronger and closer together. I laid down and listened to my HypnoBirthing meditations and birth mix. We arrived to the hospital at 8 p.m. As the night progressed, so did my surges and my body continued getting ready to give birth. I used my HypnoBirthing tools, the shower, tub, yoga positions and massage techniques to relax. At about 4 a.m., when I was 9 cm dilated and my cervix was starting to swell. We, along with our midwife and doula, knew that an epidural would be the best option to allow the swelling to go down so I could keep my plan for a vaginal birth and allow the baby to descend. After, we all napped for a couple of hours. Early in the morning I was checked again, and the baby still wasn’t coming down. We had one more chance (I did not know this at the time, but the back-up OB and staff were prepping a room for a C-section.) I napped for about 30- minutes while listening to my HypnoBirthing meditations. I relaxed and began to feel pressure, which I happily told everyone in the room about. The midwife came in and checked me again & Sarah announced that we were about to have a baby! After about 10 minutes of pushing, Grant arrived. And boy was everyone in the room taken back! He was HUGE and had a head full of hair. He immediately went to my chest and then began breastfeeding. Grant weighed in at 9 pounds 9 oz! We are so grateful for all the support in getting him safely into the world. Cynthia, thank you for your guidance and everything you taught us. What we learned from you led to such an amazing experience. My experience could not have been better! Callie Ferrari (The Birthplace in St. Vincent’s Hospital)

Cynthia, I write this story as an ecstatic new mother. You provided me with the techniques, personal attention and emotional support I was hoping for in preparing for as natural a birth as possible. And, I did it! HypnoBirthing educated my husband and me fully about today’s conventional medical practices, especially valuable for those of us choosing to birth in naturally a conventional hospital. I was empowered to recognize my choices and felt in control, safe and confident to voice my desires. Given the various birthing techniques and examples you provided in class, I built a tool box from which I drew upon and put to use in preparation for labor and during the labor. I was keenly aware of the need to release and surrender, listening attentively to the interchange of my body and mind and trusting that my baby was leading the journey. I was at complete peace with the whole experience. Kathleen Freis (Birthed naturally in Stamford Hospital)

Cynthia is very warm, friendly, compassionate and extremely knowledgeable. Being a former teacher, I do recognize that just because a person knows the material of a subject matter doesn’t mean they can really teach the material. Cynthia is an outstanding instructor; a true educator. I felt powerless before taking this course. The way she taught this course changed my perspective on giving birth and truly empowered me. This class has been one of the best experiences in my life. I would recommend everyone I know to work with Cynthia. I could go on and on raving about her course. Cynthia is a true asset to the profession and she should be commended for being so. It is a great process and gives you an empowering perspective. When it came to Cynthia’s class and the birth itself, I could not have asked for more. Tanya Hazelhurst (Birthed in Danbury CT birth center)

HypnoBirthing was absolutely every bit of what allowed me to remain so calm and in control during my birth. Looking back, I have to admit, I didn’t think I would actually be able to really do this. When I arrived at the birthing center I was already 6 cm dilated. Everyone in the room was completely calm and quiet, and I only spoke when I had to. Wesley was born on Monday, October 5th, and when he came out of my body, my midwife put him up on my chest and I heard myself say, “Ooh, my gosh, a baby! A baby!” During the process, I felt as if I were drugged in a sense, even though it was completely natural. It was an amazing experience and we are so in love! Cynthia, you should know, your students don’t just look up to you, we all love you! Thank you for everything – I am so grateful for a natural birth! Rebecca Velasquez (Birthed in Danbury Birthing Center)

Sophia Catherine Whitehead was born on 11/12 7:23pm at 7 lbs 11oz. I started feeling a minor ache at around 4 am on Saturday, November 12 and by 6:00, I was pretty sure my membranes ruptured. I decided to wake up Justin and tell him that we should start getting prepared to head to the hospital (as I was positive for GB strep and knew I had to have antibiotics every four hours). The nurse asked if we had a birth plan and we told her that we were going to be HypnoBirthing. I started having surges shortly after, but not very close together and not very intense. At this point, the doctor mentioned Pitocin as a way of helping things along. I was very calm and collected and asked if we could have an hour to ourselves, as you suggested in class, telling him we’d really like to do this naturally. He had absolutely no problem with that. For the next few hours, I turned the lights off, kept mobile & took an amazing hot shower and swayed my hips in a spiral motion while the water dripped down my back. When the doctor next checked me, I was 9 cm! I was focused the entire time and my HypnoBirthing visualizations were perfect! Once I had the urge to push, it felt awesome to be actively participating. I actually told the doctor in between pushes how much I loved this phase! After a few strong pushes, Sophia’s head was out. Her body came out easily with one push. Thank you SO much for everything, Cynthia – I wouldn’t have had such a wonderful birth story if it weren’t for you. – Melissa Whitehead, Fairfield CT (Birthed in Bridgeport Hospital)

Hi Cynthia! I really can’t thank you enough for preparing me for, and helping me to achieve, the all natural birth of our 2nd daughter. Eloise Joyce Ralph came into this world on April 8th. Since I had a long labor with our first and ended up opting for the epidural at the 18th hour, I really didn’t think I could have the birth story that I am about to type…but HypnoBirthing really worked for me and Eloise’s birth was the most amazing experience! Andrew was amazed at how calm I was. We arrived at Norwalk Hospital around 4:45 am. I focused and breathed through each surge, trying to take one at a time. I had to tune everyone out, and just kept repeating the same affirmations over and over again in my head: “My body was designed to give birth.” My doctor was so incredibly respectful of my birth plan and knew that I had requested no cervical checks. Soon I was feeling a ton of pressure and had to push. My body naturally pushed on the next surge and I felt Eloise move down the birth path. My doctor quickly did a check and I could hear him say, “She’s at a +2, +3, +4, and whoa, you’re going to pass her head on the next push!”. With the next surge I birthed Eloise’s head, just a little over 3 hours after arriving at the hospital and in just 3 pushes! She was placed back on my chest and naturally rooted and breastfed for the first time. It was magical – the whole experience – and I feel incredibly blessed to have had it go so well. Big sister Adalyn is doing great and we are just over the moon! Alexandra Ralph (Birthed naturally in Norwalk Hospital)

Dear Cynthia, I wanted to let you know that Joshua and I had a healthy baby girl Ada Laurette on Friday, May 22 after a very short labor of 4.5 hours and an unplanned, but very fulfilling, home birth! I entered my bathroom and begun pushing– just listening to what my body told me to do. My birth experience couldn’t have been better. I can honestly say that at no point did I feel any fear about what was happening within my body. I’m sure that the feeling of calm that both Joshua and I were able to maintain was due to the knowledge that we picked up in your class. I am sure that we would not have had such a calm and joyful birth without the knowledge and supportive atmosphere we experienced during your class. Thank you! – Joanne Coupet-Hemmert, Chappaqua NY (Unplanned Home Birth)

Cynthia, I can’t say enough about everything you have done for us. Prior to signing up for your HypnoBirthing class, I thought it would be a basic birthing class – but it was so much more. Cynthia, you truly care about your students. Your passion for creating a positive birth experience for your couples is so inspiring. We were devastated when the doctors decided, on our due date, that Kate had too much fluid and that our baby was too big, and that Kate would need a C-section even though the baby and Kate were both healthy. You were the first person we called after finding out that news. And you dropped everything for us, and took time out of your day to calm us down and help us understand our options. Thanks to you, Cynthia, we were properly educated about birth and we knew that we had choices. You then put us in touch with Nancy Wainer, which was such an honor. We met with Nancy, and you remained so supportive and knowledgeable about both homebirth and C-sections, allowing us the space to make the right decision for ourselves. You helped us weigh the options, which led us to making our own decision, and one we were finally at peace with. We were already past our baby’s due date when we changed our birth plan to a home birth. Our healthy baby boy Cole was delivered at home 15 days after Kate’s “due date”. Before meeting you, Cynthia, I was scared of birth and figured the only place to have a baby would be the hospital. You taught me so much about what birth truly is and gave me the confidence to consider Kate’s wish for a home birth when the medical community was recommending a C-section. Our birth would not have been the same had we never met you. You are the reason Kate did not end up with an unnecessary C-section. Cynthia, you went above and beyond what most other people would do in the same situation. Meeting you has really changed our lives and we are so grateful for everything that you have done for us. We can’t thank you enough. -Ryan Andrew, Mansfield CT (Home Birth with Nancy Wainer)

Hudson Joseph Mastropole was born naturally on June 8th at 4:36 am with the incredible support of my loving husband, midwife Sarah Najamy, doula Ashley Ortelli and of course the HypnoBirthing methods and education from you that led us down this life changing path in our birth plan. We are so blessed and completely in love and overwhelmed with joy. Please share my story and thank you for changing our lives! Sarah Mastropole(Birthed in St. Vincent’s Birth Place)

Hi Cynthia, I just wanted to let you know that Nick and I welcomed Grace Anne Taro to the world on Sept 25th, at 6:02pm. She weighed 7lbs, 4 oz. Cathy and her amazing nurses at were so wonderful. Grace made it a bit tricky as she came out with her hand up on her head. But with the incredible supportive women around me (and my awesome crying husband!), I was able to birth my beautiful baby girl. As I type this, I still can’t believe she is real! Nick and I feel so blessed to have taken your class and had an opportunity to get to know you. We could not have imagined bringing Grace into the world any other way. To think just a week ago I was having such a hard time wrapping my brain around my GBS positive test result, which led to me moving from Greenwich Hospital to the Birthing Center… I would have never had the courage to make that switch without the knowledge we obtained in your class! Thank you so much for everything you do to educate, enlighten and empower women (and men!) through your classes. You hold a very special place in our hearts. Diana Taro, Greenwich CT (Birthed in Connecticut Childbirth & Women’s Center)

Hi Cynthia! I have been excited to reach out to you! Our birth went incredibly well…. I labored for under six hours, pushed for 45 mins, so overall relatively quick. We were able to have exactly the birth we wanted – that is, with midwives in a hospital setting, all natural, with both my husband and my mom by my side. I really couldn’t have done it without your class and the network of support you helped me to build. – Alarice Lacanlale, Greenwich CT (Birthed at Yale New Haven Hospital)

Cynthia – We had our baby! Yes, the couple that planned on a 41-42 week pregnancy (for the sake of our move) delivered at 36 weeks and 6 days! So much for me being in control of that! I just found out that day at my midwife appointment that I was positive for Group B Strep and would have to come right to the hospital if membranes released. I was positive mine would not…But, that night around midnight it did! So we packed some bags and got to hospital and in a room by 2 am. Once we were in the car I was having pressure every 3 minutes. I was so very grateful to have taken your class. I stayed calm and quiet, found it best not to talk to others at all except when they absolutely needed to ask me something. We had Orion completely naturally at 8:12 am (about 7 hours later) and although it was not ‘easy’, it really wasn’t bad. I felt in control the whole time, I was relaxed and almost slept between the stronger times of pressure. Antonio was great, calm and relaxed himself and reminded me of the breathing, which really saved me towards the end as it gave me something to focus on. Thank you again…your class was SO worth it!! – Kim Breen, Glendale NY (Birthed in Phelps Hospital)

When my wife told me that she would like us to take Cynthia’s class at HypnoBirthing of Connecticut, I thought; What is HypnoBirthing and why do I need to learn HypnoBirthing techniques if I’m not the one giving birth? The truth is, the class is much more than HypnoBirthing or what you expect from a childbirth education class. Cynthia teaches and explains your birthing options with real-like examples, and gives you the information to choose what is right for you and your family. You will find yourself really questioning why the birth experience is so important for the baby (and the mom), so the family can look back on everything as a happy experience to feel at peace with. I feel Cynthia showed us how to have a humanized birth, and how the father can enjoy his own role and contribute by being attentive and supportive to the mother in the ways she needs. During the course I ended up changing my view on childbirth, and ultimately I started understanding my wife had many choices, and I was able to support her decision to have a home birth with our midwife, Vicki Hadley. A couple months after completing Cynthia’s class, our son Mateo was born at home and everything went as great as we had dreamed it would be. – Matias Gormaz, Purchase NY (Home Birth)
