The Trouble with Fear
If you are not treated with kindness and respect during labor, or if you experience fear because you don’t understand what is happening around you, the natural response is to tense your muscles, clench your teeth or make fists. When you do this, your body releases adrenaline and three things can happen:
- Your baby ceases to receive the flow of oxygenated blood that he needs during birth;
- Your cervix constricts — the opposite of dilation — causing your body to counter with longer and more intense uterine surges; and
- Your birth will stall or stop completely, giving doctors the cue to perform a surgical birth due to “failure to progress”.
Childbirth in itself is inherently safe and uncomplicated, but fear and tension can cause labor pain and create complications.
